Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP)

Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP) and IAIS, University of Exeter have been working together since 2022 to advance the critical analysis of politics and current events in the region. Established in 1971, MERIP brings work by leading scholars, journalists and activists to audiences around the globe through its acclaimed quarterly publication Middle East Report (MER). With its wide and committed readership, MERIP shapes how people think and talk about the Middle East, North Africa and their communities, influencing public opinion and political decision-making.

Through this partnership, MER is edited by a team based at IAIS: Marya Hannun (Managing Editor) and Katie Natanel (Executive Editor) – MERIP’s senior editorial team. Support from Exeter ensures that MERIP’s editorial activities maintain the high standards of analysis and critique that the magazine and network (Editorial Committee) are known for. This editorial consistency and excellence enable both MERIP and IAIS to reach new audiences – and underlines the position of IAIS as a world-leading research institution that attracts, nourishes and promotes critical scholarship.

Paul Silverstein, Chair of MERIP’s Board of Directors, remarked “We see this partnership with IAIS as a crucial step in furthering our mission to reach academics, journalists, NGOs and informed citizens beyond North America.” Since partnering with IAIS, MERIP has responded to – and at times anticipated – the global and regional events that make headline news, influence policy and shape everyday lives. From Sudan and Palestine to post-fossil politics, MERIP and IAIS are responding to the urgent concerns and conflicts of our time – as a shared commitment to the future.
