Established in 2003 by HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, the Alwaleed Endowment at the University of Exeter provides financial support for students to undertake Arabic language study and dissertation research in Arabic-speaking countries. The Prince Alwaleed Award provides students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Arabic-speaking world through immersive experiences that enhance their Arabic language proficiency and cultural knowledge.

We are extremely proud to say that in the last twenty years following the original donation from Alwaleed Philanthropies, over 700 Exeter students have travelled to countries including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Morocco and Tunisia. Collectively and individually, each trip has enormously benefitted our students, both academically and culturally.

"Together, we bridge the gap between cultures and forge the way for global communities to become more open and tolerant. We seek to innovate and foster a new meaning of peace and inclusiveness through education, art and conversational exchange between communities."

"The support from Alwaleed Philanthropies has led to life-changing opportunities for our students and helped them on the path to careers and further study."

Professor Lisa Roberts

President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter

"Through fostering cultural understanding and empowering students to engage directly with Arabic speaking communities, we continue our commitment to building bridges of communication and fostering a more inclusive world. These experiences are instrumental in breaking down racial biases, cultural misconceptions and stereotypes."
