One of the keys to understanding a culture is to study its literature. This module examines religious and political themes in Arabic literature as a lens onto wider cultural trends and developments in the Middle East. It draws on a selection of novels, short stories and poems to explore themes of political and religious conflict, violence, fundamentalism, gender, patriarchy, sexuality and Sufism. The module is suitable for students with no prior knowledge of Arabic (all texts are read in translation).
