Melissa (Mel) Verbeek is a PhD candidate in Middle East Studies in her first year and is funded by the ESRC South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). Her thesis, "Snapshots of Syrian displacement: Reevaluating humanitarian portrayals of resilience & vulnerability through Photovoice" aims to explore the potential differences between the lived experiences of displaced Syrians living in Jordan and UN/NGO portrayals of displacement. Specifically, by using Photovoice, a research methodology that involves research collaborators taking photos of their environments, as well as focus groups, Mel aims to explore the realities of protracted displacement.
